Empty TEMP folders in Windows XP

pardhans  Your computer may slow down over time due to leftover Temporary (.tmp) files and Temporary Internet files . Temporary files and Temporary Internet files are left behind when a machine crashes, from installing and uninstalling programs.
These steps are written for  Windows XP. To see a Windows 7 version of these steps, please go to: How To Empty TEMP folders in Windows 7

Large number of left over items in these temporary folders has an impact on the speed of  FileMaker Pro launching. For some reason FileMaker Pro has to look at every one of them as it launches. As the numbers of .tmp files build, so does the launch time. In some cases, it may take minutes to open.

Set your System to Display Hidden Files and Folders

Only delete .tmp files after a restart. Windows creates .tmp files to perform some task when you reboot. This is why after installing some programs you are prompted to reboot the computer to complete the install. Once you reboot it is safe to delete the files. If you have an Axim handheld, remove it from its cradle as well.
  1. Click Start, then click Shut Down. Restart the computer.
  2. Once the computer has re-started, click Start, then click Control Panel, and then click Folder Options.
    • If you don't see Folder Options, click on Switch to Classic View on left side.
  3. Click the View tab. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
  4. Click OK.
